The Tongue

Egyptologists tell us that this determinitive hieroglyphic represented a cow’s tongue.  It carried the meaning of the tongue, itself (a noun); or as a verb, anything done by the tongue, such as speaking, tasting, telling.

Thus, for the Nephites writers, tongue was used to refer to anything spoken, a language (the tongue could be modified by the addition of the name of a person to represent the language of that particular person), or an account.  For some other examples of complex characters using the tongue character go to Tongue 2.

The sample illustrated above shows all instances in which ‘tongue’ is found in the first two lines of the Caractors Transcript (CT).  At the bottom of each line is a duplication of the characters at the top, but the shaded portion EXCLUDES the tongue:  thus, it is the UNSHADED portion that shows the inclusion of the ‘tongue’ in each character.
